My journey took me through extreme highs and lows, which ultimately led me to become the man of God I am. I did not always know the Lord the way that I know him now, but I take delight in the relationship that we have now.
Inspired to write about the renewing of the mind because of the transformation that I have experienced. Having mental health challenges as a young adult changed the trajectory of my life. As a young college student and devoted son, I felt challenged in my relationships with my coparent and with myself.
Yet amid all those demands, I am still being pulled in so many different, conflicting directions. I didn’t understand how to navigate through life, and the indwelling spirit was there, but not connected to that key ingredient. I was a ship without a rudder. A struggle, evident, but I did not know that it could change if I changed my mindset. I wrote from the perspective of the change we need, already inside of us, yearning to express itself.
I ended up working in psychiatry and serving others with a sense of compassion and insight that benefited me and others. I did obtain a degree in Psychology, and that is the extent of my formal education. Still, the wealth of knowledge I acquired working in inpatient psychiatry and interacting with clients was priceless.
Listening to others, I began to realize the importance of having someone to talk to and of hearing not just what you say, but how they feel. Psychiatric skills are transferable to other settings. I learned that in your daily walk, people need to express how they feel. It’s no accident that people tell their stories to perfect strangers and feel relief in that moment.
I, too, realized in writing my story that I needed to be transparent and express my needs. My book began as a loose compilation of thoughts and concerns about diverse topics. It was when I presented my writings to coworkers they encouraged me to get them published. I am grateful for the support I have received from others, so in my writings, I express my challenges and concerns because we need a platform to recognize that mental health is essential and that we can be the phenomenal human beings we can be to the best of our ability.
Don’t let the naysayers discourage you or define your vision of yourself. There
the rough, emerging trust in the process as it unfolds. Contrary to popular belief, this is the best time to be on this planet.
The transformation process is revealing itself daily. Hold on to your seats, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Do not allow your emotional entanglement deter you or cause you to judge things by their appearance; like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, there is an emerging element that will enable you to be the person you are if you only believe.
